USA – American Flag Cake

Today is Independence Day in the USA! Why not celebrating it with a delicious cake looking like the American flag? Or maybe surprising a friend who’s going soon to the USA? Check out this terrific patriotic cake recipe! That didn’t look as good as I expected but was still really tasty!

I chose to make a yogurt cake because it’s so easy and fast to prepare. It is one of the first thing we learn to cook in France (if it’s not the first). What about you in your country? What do you learn first to cook as a child? Let us know in the comments.

  • 1 tub of plain yogurt

  • 2 tubs of sugar

  • 1 packet of vanilla sugar or a bit of vanilla extract

  • 3 tubs of flour

  • 1/2 tub of sunflower oil

  • 3 eggs

  • 1/2 packet of backing powder

  • 1 pinch of salt

  • a handful of blueberries

  • a pack of strawberries

  • whipped cream

  • vanilla icing

The Yogurt cake

  • Heat the oven to 180°C (350°F / Thermostat 6).

  • Grease a rectangle baking pan with butter or oil.

  • Whisk together with a wooden spoon the yogurt, sugar, vanilla sugar and eggs.

  • Add the flour, baking powder, salt, and oil and stir until no lumps remain.

  • Pour the batter into the cake pan and bake for 35 min.

  • When a knife comes out clean, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool.

The Cake decorating

  • Cut the top of the cake to have it flat as you can. I chose to keep the cake in the baking pan to be sure to not break it: you can of course take it out.

  • Prepare the vanilla icing following the packaging instructions and cover the cake with it. You can also use whipped cream to create the white lines of the flag.

  • Wash the blueberries and strawberries, cut the strawberries in half and arrange the fruits (better than me) on the cake following the American flag pattern.
